Overview

This event monitor can check any Windows performance counter including the counters added by third-party applications. It can alert when counters go over or under specified values and it also keeps graph data for the counter, enabling you to detect long-term patterns and trends.

Monitoring Options

This event monitor provides the following options:

Alert with [Info/Warning/Error/Critical] if the device cannot be contacted

This option will alert you with your choice of alert if the device cannot be contacted.

Alert with [Info/Warning/Error/Critical] when a counter cannot be found

This option will alert you with your choice of alert if one or more of the counters you're monitoring cannot be found.

Object Name

Select the performance counter object that the event monitor will check. A performance counter object is a group of individual counters. You can enter this value manually or use the Chooser icon at the end of the row to select it automatically.

Counter Name

Select the performance counter that the event monitor will check. You can enter this value manually or use the Chooser icon at the end of the row to select it automatically.

Instance

Some counters have instances. For example, the Processor\% CPU Time counter will have a _Total instance and individual instances for each CPU core. Select the counter instance that you want to monitor. Some performance counters do have instances. In this case, leave the instance field blank. You can enter this value manually or use the Chooser icon at the end of the row to select it automatically.

Alert if the value is [less than | greater than]

Select the comparison type that the event monitor will use.

Value

Enter the value that will be compared with what the event monitor detects.

Data Type

Select the data type that best matches the selected counter. The data type will determine how the value is presented in alerts and graphs.

Level

Select the status level for the alerts that will be generated when the comparison check fails.

Sample Interval

This value is used internally to complete certain performance counter calculations. The default value is the best value to use in almost all circumstances.

Authentication and Security

The account used for authentication must be a member of the Performance Monitor Users group or have admin rights.

The performance counters you select to monitor will appear as data points in the data point chooser.
